Markets, Events and the Life of a Place
After years living abroad, we came to value the role markets and public events can play in the life of a place. A good market gives people a reason to come into town, stay a little longer and feel more connected to where they live. It gives small traders a route to customers. It gives residents and visitors a low-pressure way to gather, wander, talk, eat, buy, listen, notice and return.
At their best, markets and events strengthen local economies, but they also do something less easily measured. They increase belonging. They create community connectivity. They give people shared rituals outside work and home. They help a place feel more generous, more visible and more alive to itself. That is the spirit behind Pop Vesta.
In Honour of Vesta Davis
Pop Vesta Markets and Events is named for Michael’s grandmother, Vesta Davis, whose name originates with the goddess of home and hearth.
Vesta Davis gave time to her community, baked chicken like nobody’s business, sang in the choir and always sat third row back at church. She loved her flower garden and always had hanging baskets of red geraniums across her front porch, a tradition now carried on lovingly by her daughters and granddaughters and great-granddaughters. She loved board games and family rituals, and played in the same bridge club for over 30 years, and her shuffling techniques are still envied across the county.
Vesta carried hospitality as a way of life: practical, social, observant, generous and full of ritual. She welcomed you like you were expected, loved and cherished.
Pop Vesta takes its name from that world of home, hearth, food, flowers, friendship and welcome.

What we are building
Pop Vesta Markets and Events develops markets, stalls, supper clubs and community events in Carteret County and coastal North Carolina.
We are researching, listening closely and paying attention to what Carteret County needs, wants and is ready to celebrate.
The work begins with what is already here: makers, farmers, fishers, artists, bakers, collectors, cooks, musicians, growers, small businesses, civic groups, residents and visitors.
The aim is simple: to create events that feel rooted, generous, useful, beautiful and worth popping down to.

At Strawberry Exchange, summer is measured in handfuls of ripe strawberries. Each serving is made to order with fresh berries, Belgian chocolate and a light scattering of sea salt. Familiar, generous and quietly indulgent, it is one of those rare treats that never goes out of style.
